Chapter Ten
Back at her flat, Darcy took a long, hot shower and then took an even longer nap. She woke up when her phone rang.
“Hello?” she said, struggling to sound wide awake.
“Having a lie-in?” Lisa asked.
“Having a nap,” Darcy answered. “I was stuck out at the Kewley farm overnight and I didn’t get a lot of sleep.”
“Stuck?” Lisa repeated. “Is that a euphemism for something?”
Darcy laughed. “Not at all. The strong winds brought a tree down right in front of me. It blocked the driveway and I couldn’t get out.”
“Are you okay? And the car?” Lisa asked.
“I’m fine and so is the car,” Darcy assured her. “But I ended up staying in Kerron’s guest room for the night.”
“And how was that?”
“It was lonely,” Darcy told her. “And strange and awkward and a whole bunch of other things that I haven’t quite figured out yet.”
“We need to get together,” Lisa replied. “I feel like I haven’t seen you in years. Let’s have dinner tonight.”
“What about your wonderful husband?”
“He can survive for a night without me,” Lisa said firmly. “We’ve been together rather a lot since the wedding. It will be good for him to miss me for a few hours.”
Darcy felt as if she ought to refuse, to allow Lisa time with her new husband, but she missed her friend too much to do it. “If you’re sure,” she said.
“I’m sure. Let’s go somewhere fancy and have too much wine and just get starters and puddings,” Lisa suggested.
Darcy laughed. While they’d talked on the phone once in a while, she really missed her friend. With a time and place settled, Darcy spent her afternoon tidying her flat. Before she took another shower, she sent a quick email to Alastair and Michael, letting them know that Kerron had signed the car park contract. With that out of the way, she got ready for her evening out.
Her taxi arrived right on time and she was in Douglas with a few minutes to spare. She took a seat at the bar while she waited for Lisa. The bartender gave her a wave and a smile as he finished filling an order at the other end of the bar. Before he reached her, Darcy felt an arm go around her waist.
“You look incredible,” a silky smooth voice whispered in her ear.
“Leave me alone, Finlo,” Darcy said without turning her head.
He chuckled softly. “You don’t mean that,” he told her. “You miss me.”
“Actually,” Darcy replied. “I really don’t.” She was surprised to find that she was being honest. Her new job was keeping her so busy that she hadn’t even given Finlo a thought in some time.
Finlo just laughed. “Ouch, my poor ego,” he complained. “I thought we had something special.”
“Maybe,” Darcy said with a shrug. “But it was over a long time ago.”
“I miss you,” he told her.
Now Darcy turned her head and met his eyes. He looked completely sincere.
“I’m sorry,” she told him softly.
He frowned and straightened away from her. “You know where I am if you change your mind,” he said.
